MW4 campaign early access opens with all 16 missions

Owners of a digital pre-order can already play all 16 campaign missions of MW4 before the October 23 launch; DMZ early access opens on October 20.

Modern Warfare 4 has opened early access for its campaign to those who pre-ordered the game: since Friday the 16th, Pacific time — already the 17th in South Korea —, buyers of the Standard and Vault digital editions can play the 16 missions of the full campaign before the official launch, set for October 23. The announcement is on the official Call of Duty blog, and the rollout was also recorded by Inven Global.
"Experience the Campaign now so you're fully prepared to jump into DMZ on the 20th and into the full Modern Warfare 4 launch on October 23."

How to play the campaign now
This is not a demo nor a beta with limited content: early access includes the entire campaign, from the first to the last chapter, for anyone who pre-ordered or pre-purchased any digital version of the game — the Standard Digital Edition or the Vault Edition. The benefit lasts until the official launch on October 23, after which the game simply opens for everyone. The platform list is long: Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, PlayStation 5, Battle.net, Steam and — sign of the times — Nintendo Switch 2.
Anyone who wants to catch up on the story before diving in has official help: Activision published a narrative recap video on its official channels, covering the invasion of Urzikstan, the origins of Task Force 141 and the deadly conflict between Captain Price and General Shepherd. The full recap, A Narrative Recap, is available on YouTube.
The story and the new protagonist
The campaign takes place at the height of a full-scale invasion threatening the world, with 16 missions spread across locations that include the Korean Peninsula, Paris, New York and Mumbai. The biggest suspense sits in Korea: most of the opening journey follows an all-new character, recruit Park Hyun Jun, a South Korean soldier facing the invasion in his own territory alongside squadmates.
Longtime Modern Warfare fans get the hook that really matters: John Price returns as an outlaw operator, hunted while tracking the mastermind behind the whole operation. The global invasion becomes the backdrop for two parallel races — the Korean recruit defending his country on the front line and the Task Force 141 veteran chasing whoever is responsible.
Rewards that carry across modes
Completing the 16 missions in order unlocks a rewards track you can enjoy in multiplayer and DMZ as soon as the game goes live. There are eight base operators spread through the campaign, alternated with calling cards, emblems, loading screens and double XP tokens, according to the official table.
| Mission completed | Reward |
|---|---|
| 1 | Base operator Chow |
| 4 | Base operator Dallas |
| 7 | Base operator Luca |
| 9 | Base operator Ohji |
| 11 | Base operator Kal |
| 13 | Base operator Dunn |
| 15 | Base operator West |
| 16 | Base operator Park |
In between the operators, progression also delivers the "No More Rules" Calling Card, the "Ready Line" Loading Screen, the "Gone Dark" Emblem and four double XP tokens, plus two double Weapon XP tokens. Nothing stays locked in the campaign: everything unlocked now already lands in your inventory on the 23rd.
DMZ goes live on October 20
Before the mode switch, it is worth knowing the status of your progress: Activision has not announced a reset of campaign saves at launch, and the expectation is that progress remains available from October 23 — but the company has not detailed a formal save-transfer policy, and save behavior across different platforms remains unconfirmed. In other words: someone advancing the campaign on PS5 should not assume their progress jumps to PC without official confirmation.
Early access continues in waves: on October 20, DMZ early access opens — the franchise's extraction mode reaches pre-order buyers three days before launch. Activision is betting on squad readiness before day one: friends can already be added via the Activision ID, with cross-play supported squads and built-in party tools inside the game itself.
Pre-ordering — the key to all this early access — remains available on platform stores, at participating retailers, in in-game stores and on the official website. The Activision editions page details the bonuses: on top of the early campaign, digital buyers get the Hunter Killer Operator Skin, usable right now in Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 and Warzone, and the Inner Circuit M4 Weapon Blueprint — with a translucent "OG Green" treatment on Xbox platforms, celebrating 25 years of the console. Anyone who owns a Call of Duty released from 2019 onward on the same account also qualifies for the Loyalty Discount.
A launch outside Game Pass
A detail that breaks with the pattern of recent years: Modern Warfare 4 arrives as a standalone launch and does not join Game Pass on day one. The Xbox service keeps legacy Call of Duty titles — Black Ops 7, Black Ops 6 and Modern Warfare III — for Game Pass Ultimate subscribers, but the new game is out at launch. It marks a change of posture from Microsoft with the franchise after the Activision acquisition, and the catalog's behavior after launch is worth watching — anyone who followed the new Game Pass games for August and September 2026 knows heavyweight entries in the catalog stay punctual.
For readers everywhere, the path is the usual one: pre-order on the digital stores of each platform or on the official website, with early access attached to the account. And the franchise keeps expanding beyond consoles — on the big screen, the Call of Duty movie already has an officially defined setting, with a theatrical release on the way.
